Welcome to Cardington Hangars

3 miles south of Bedford in the UK, the two Cardington Hangars (known as the sheds) dominate the Bedfordshire landscape. Indeed they are the largest structures of their kind in Europe.

Hangar No.1 (also known as Shed 1) is being updated but it is available for lease and is currently being used for a variety of purposes which includes balloon maintenance and testing and music rehearsals.

To convey an idea of the size, each door weighs 470 tons. Shed 1 is 247 meters long, 83 meters wide and 55 meters high. The floor area is 5 acres (223,000 square feet) and the total volume of this building is 760,000 cubic meters - the equivalent of 8,338 London double deck buses. Nelson's Column would not touch the ceiling and an aircraft carrier could fit inside.

These iconic buildings have been used for many purposes over the years and are still ideally suited to these purposes most notably: logistics and warehousing, movie studios and commercial airship / balloon construction.
